How to Stay Warm on a Budget: Smart Tips to Save Money This Winter

If there are two things the British love discussing it’s the weather and the current price of gas and electricity. And who can blame us? It’s freezing out there! Heating your home with current prices can seem daunting, but there’s no reason to be shivering in bed when there are so many cost-effective ways to stay warm. Below are a few of our tried and tested favourites.

Electric Blankets

Costing just 2p per hour to heat, electric blankets are a necessity in these harsh winters. There’s a model for most budgets, and if used correctly, they can last for up to ten years, making them a great investment for chilly times ahead. These are best used laid flat on your sofa or bed and are sure to provide some cosy times ahead! If you’re prone to feeling chilly whilst you drift off, be sure to find an electric blanket with an automatic timer so you can schedule it to turn off once you’re asleep.

Be Smart with your Radiator

Studies have shown that turning your radiator down just one degree can save you up to 10% on your energy bill. If you’re using your radiator efficiently, you can make the maximum savings whilst still staying toasty. Firstly, we’d recommend bleeding your radiators to ensure they’re working as they should and you’re not using any more energy than needed. Secondly, try not to block your radiator - ensuring there is no furniture or appliances in front of the radiator can ensure the warmth circulates the room best. Thirdly, invest in draught excluders so the heat is not lost to those pesky gaps in the home.

Dress for Business

Of course, layering up will help keep you warm - but you won’t need to wear your whole wardrobe at once with these tips! Thermal vests and long sleeves are relatively inexpensive but can make a huge difference in your body temperature. This layer should be worn close to the skin to lock in heat. Pair this with a loose wool jumper or fleece for maximum comfort. Don’t forget to keep your head and feet warm with a cosy hat and slippers!
